Lateral Reinstatement

What Is Lateral Reinstatement?

When a new cured in place pipe liner settles into an old pipe, the existing laterals get closed off that tie into the homes sewer system. After the new inner pipe cures, holes will need to be cut in order to make openings for the waste water to flow into the sewer from the homes lateral lines. This is known as Lateral Reinstatement.

Reinstatement used to be a very time-consuming and challenging process when it came to trenchless pipe repair. Now, thanks to advances in technology, the process has become much easier and quicker. Our plumbing technicians use state-of-the-art robotic high speed cutters that incorporate CCTV cameras to cut holes into the liner to access the lateral connections. These robots are water-proof and remote-operated from a control panel. They come with different cutting heads that vary in shape and size.

How Does It Work?

First, the technician will use measurements which were captured from previous footage to determine the exact location of each lateral connection. Using the CCTV camera, the robotic cutter will then be positioned right at each connection. Once the cutter is correctly placed, the lateral is opened by a special head which cuts through the liner. This process is done for each lateral as the robot moves in and out of the pipe. After each lateral has been opened up, the liner is then cut to the entire diameter of the lateral without damaging it. All of the lateral connections are now restored and waste water can flow flawlessly through the pipes.
